She completed her residency in Pediatric and Binocular Vision at the Michigan College of Optometry, where she gained experience in myopia control, strabismus, amblyopia, vision therapy, low vision, and neuro-rehabilitation. At PUCO, Dr. Spence is passionate about teaching and strives to connect classroom learning with clinical application.
The Eyes Behind the Work: Supporting Vision in Precision Practice From an optometric perspective, sustained close-detailed work under magnification places high demand on the eye's accommodative and binocular vision system. This lecture will review how the eye focuses, coordinates and adapts during prolonged near tasks. The lecture will also review magnification devices (loupes, magnifying lamps, microscopes), and how to alter working distance. We will discuss how lighting, posture, and optical setup interact with visual physiology, and why certain symptoms of eye strain develop over time. Practical, preventative strategies grounded in eye care principles will be provided to help electrologists optimize their visual setup, recognize early signs of visual fatigue and protect long-term ocular health in a precision based career.

“On the Face of It: It’s More Than What It Seems” Helping others is the goal, how to best provide help is the ongoing challenge. For all who have chosen service professions, active listening, empathy and compassion are the basis for interaction with our clients. Learned beliefs or impressions about appearance can complicate treatment. Expectations for outcome are intertwined with lived experience. Part of the work is to help our clients gain relief from feeling self-conscious about their appearance.

FlourishAdvocacy.com
Transgender Patient Advocacy: Practical Support Electrologists will learn how to support clients through the authorizations process, without taking on the role of full-time advocate, which is especially critical for single-provider practices. We will explore the unique challenges transgender clients face when navigating insurance coverage for gender-affirming electrolysis. Attendees will learn about proper documentation and common mistakes that can trigger denials. Finally, we will examine trends in insurance coverage, identifying what treatments are typically covered, and what changes are emerging in the field.

Ergonomics and Wellness for Electrologists A presentation designed specifically for electrologists to reduce pain, prevent injury, and optimize on-the-job wellness. The session explores ergonomics, including definitions, foundational equipment, and participants’ current pain patterns. Attendees will learn practical strategies for posture, spinal alignment, and breathing, as well as movement techniques to interrupt the pain-spasm-pain cycle both on and beyond the job. Emphasis is placed on applying daily self-care, integrating corrective exercise, ergonomic principles, and mindful movement to support long-term health and professional longevity.

The 5Rhythms has been the healing modality that allowed her to finally resolve the trauma of violation that had impacted most of her days. After decades of therapy, it was the somatic listening to the body that actually offered the key to relief & rebirth. It is her greatest joy to share this beloved practice with any human curious about conscious movement practices & learning to trust their instincts again. Somatics, Safety & Being Seen We will explore the power of the pack through curiosity, sharing & embodiment practices. Through investigating the animal body, movement & our continuous connection with those around us, guests will discover how important their own nervous system regulation is in creating a safe enough experience for their clients. When we learn to be more honest & transparent with what is happening on the inside of us, we automatically create a more felt sense of safety for those in our care.
